Antispyware: 
The general population refers to any computer problem as a “virus,” but
in reality most of the threats prevalent today are other forms of
malware: Trojan horses, worms, keyloggers, adware, rootkits and spyware.
At the core of Avast Internet Security is a combo antivirus and
antispyware scanning engine, which effectively locates all of these
threats. You can perform a routine scan whenever you want, but the
scanner also works in real time, scanning files as they are accessed and
opened. Scans won’t slow you down either, because the intelligent Avast
scanner is optimized to only rescan files if they have been changed
since the last scan.
Antivirus:
Along with the always-on antivirus and antispyware protection, Avast
Internet Security also includes a boot-time scanner. The boot-time
scanner will run when your computer is restarted and pre-empts the
operating system to find any deeply rooted malware that may interfere
with normal boot-up. It’s a useful scan capability, though it would be
more useful for emergency situations if it were available on a bootable
recovery disk. Furthermore, while Avast is really good at detecting
threats, the internet security software doesn’t always remove them quite
as effectively.
Avast Internet Security has eight protective shields covering various angles where malware may attack:- File System Shield – Monitors every file and program on your computer in real time
- Mail Shield – Scans all inbound and outbound email traffic with heuristics to uncover new threats
- Web Shield – Intelligently checks websites, downloads and scripts without slowing you down
- P2P Shield – Inspects files obtained from over 30 popular peer-to-peer file sharing programs
- IM Shield – Intercepts and scans downloads shared from 24 instant messaging clients
- Network Shield – Blocks malicious URLs and prevents network intrusions
- Script Shield – Examines local and online scripts to prevent hijacking
- Behavior Shield – Keeps an eye out for suspicious activity to stop rootkits and even undiscovered new threats
Firewall:
The robust firewall in Avast Internet Security is one of the features
you won’t get with Avast Free or Pro versions. The rules-based silent
firewall monitors any network connection and has three predefined
profiles. The home profile is for low-risk settings, and the public
profile is for higher-risk networks like at an airport or internet café.
The default work profile is the medium ground that blocks your ports
from hackers.
The firewall uses heuristic analysis to provide dynamic protection from
new threats. Rather than just signature-matching files with known
malware, the Avast firewall evaluates file behavior to expose hidden
threats that are new variants which haven’t been discovered yet.
